What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process that allows a person to come to gain a fuller understanding of their abilities, difficulties, motivations or worries and it is for the treatment of emotional, behavioural, personality, and psychiatric disorders based primarily on verbal or non-verbal communication and interventions. The aims is to alleviate psychological distress through therapies such as Guided Affected Imagery (GAI), Psychoanalysis, Gestalt Therapies and other therapies including Emotional Resolution and are concerned with uncovering memories or thoughts that you tend to mask as you get on with the pressures of your everyday life.  Psychotherapy is commonly used for psychological problems that accumulated over a number of years such as depression and anxiety. Psychotherapy treatments can last anything from a few weeks to a few months, depending on your progress, and it can be stand alone therapy or work in conjunction with other therapies such as Hypnosis, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and NLP.

Guided Affected Imagery

altIs a simple process that uses your imagination as a medium for change and healing. People report many different experiences on this journey in the meadows and what they encounter on the way, you will unconsciously bring to mind imaginings, thoughts of feelings that in some way you may think relevant or not. Imaginings are not the same as visualizations because to visualize something you have to think about this. GAI is done on an unconscious level, you are free to wonder and encounter or reflect on whatever you want to. GAI works on a psycho-dynamic background of understanding by contact with the resulting symbols. Your psychotherapist will give you enough stimuli to prompting/questioning so you can interact with various stimulus you through your journey, he or she will take notes of language and symbols and responding to your unique experience. This process can help to gain a greater understanding of what other therapies could be helpful to you. The goal of the GAI is to help you to work through an actual conflict or issue, and the healthy further development your personality in a self reflexive process. Images come and go, some hang in the air longer than others whilst you reflect and travel, it really is the most peaceful experience one can have and for those who prefer an option to hypnosis GAI can be the answer. After the session there will be time to reflect on the imaginings and discuss what was good, what you would prefer to do differently, if it was a useful experience and how you can go forward to get better results for the future.

The sessions are generally one hour and can take place over a period of weeks to months, depending on your requirements and the results obtained.


Gestalt Therapy

altDr Fitz Perls says of Gestalt therapy, “It changes paper people to real people, it make the hollow man of our time come to life and teach him to use his inborn potential”. It is about aligning yourself with what is important to you, and those you care for, because if any thoughts and feelings are manifested in such a way that they do not align with your values then conflict arises.  We are all shaped by our values and beliefs of our past experiences and our fantasies of the future. In Gestalt Therapy we explore is as a partnership, something a psychotherapist does with you, not to you. It is formally presented as Psychotherapy but in practise it is a way a life, a way of aligning yourself, making essential changes to your mind set so you can deal with the frustration or pain that harms you and stops your lack of growth.


Suffering is never easy to accept but we may all be put in a position where we do have to face pain or suffering caused by emotional distress, the frustration of perfectionism, and your way of dealing with how others regard you.  Whatever issue you face it is a result of your own mindset and the expectations that you align yourself with no matter how catastrophic the implications, our expectations can come self defeating.  The results can be psychological and physiological and can be detrimental to your well-being so getting to the underlying causes of the issue can be examined and challenged.


The empty chair therapy is a very powerful technique that can be used safely and effectively to resolve many issues, giving you the opportunity to ask questions, to answer question and address issues that otherwise you could not.  Your therapist will guide you through this process which can be an emotional roller coaster of emotions, it is very much and here and now process that brings to light issues and allows you to resolve them. This process can be sued for any situation where communications have been left open and you need closure. The Psychotherapist will go through a session working in the here and now, opening up communication and raising awareness so you can learn about yourself and become open to others point of view and accept them even if they do not align with yours. Gestalt Therapy is phonological in nature, it searches for understanding through what is revealed and is about raising awareness of ourselves and others. 

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is the name given to the theory of mind developed originally by altSigmund Freud, and this therapy involves uncovering unhelpful thoughts and memories, allowing you to bring into your conscious awareness what is affecting you.  As a method of psychological help, psychoanalysis is based on the theory that early relationships with parents, childhood experiences which can have enduring effects on psychological functioning and are the source of conflicts which can block development of the affected individual. To some degree, everyone is affected by deep seated unconscious, archaic relationships and conflicts and psychoanalysis can help free people to live their lives in a richer and more fulfilling way.


Psychoanalysis opens up channels of communication and gives you the opportunity to unburden yourself. The psychotherapists is trained to pick up hidden patterns and meanings and has ability to draw on knowledge of the developmental factors that shape your individual experience of yourselves and others and investigates the importance of early relationships/attachments. The whole process relies on the therapist actively listening as he/she mediates the way you interact to what you are communicating not just with your voice but with your body but also by observing the affects of your conscious and unconscious communication when you are experiencing the therapy.


This therapy is better known as couch therapy, and there is no specific time for duration of treatment. The purpose of Psychoanalysis is to gain a better understanding of why you may be finding aspects of your life challenging, to facilitate the change and process and development of self-awareness/insight is a step in achieving progress.You can make the best choices when you examine the limitations of  you assumptions you make about  yourself and your circumstances. Psychoanalytic treatment gives you the opportunity to examine those assumptions, understand their origins in your life, modify them if necessary, and then you can start to make better choices for yourself.
