What is a Phobia?

altA phobia is more than a fear; it can be over whelming to those it effects and can be viewed as a type on anxiety disorder. Phobias affect around 10 million people in the UK regardless of gender or age.  A specific phobia is an intense fear of something that poses little or no actual danger and can be the result Sensitising Emotional Event (SEE) or an underlying cause that the suffer may not even recall.  Phobias can be categorised are Simple or Complex. Phobia can also be the result of a learned behaviour, for instance if a family member as a fear of spiders, another family member may develop the same phobia.

Simple Phobias

Simple phobias are usually fears about specific objects, situations or activities and often start in early childhood. The symptoms of a simple phobia usually subside as the child grows older.

  • Fear of Dentist/Doctor etc
  • Fear of animals
  • Fear of flying
  • Fear of crossing bridges
  • Fear of darkness
  • Fear of noise
  • Fear of needles or pointed objects
  • Fear of riding in a car
  • Fear of thunder and lightning

Complex Phobias

The causes of Complex phobias are not clear, but they usually start in early puberty or adulthood, the symptoms can be debilitating and enduring. As described above, a complex phobia is normally the result of a SEE or has an underlying cause. If someone was trapped in an enclosed space they may go on to develop Claustrophobia. A suffer may have one or several phobias, or a fear of everything, panophobia.

  • Fear of enclosed spaces
  • Fear of unfamiliar surroundings
  • Fear of heights
  • Fear of social situations
  • Fear of imperfection
  • Fear of men/woman
  • Fear of bacteria
  • Fear of food
  • Fear of smells

There are many more than those stated above, the effects of a phobia vary from a mild reaction, feeling slightly uncomfortable to severe anxiety that could lead to panic attack or,  one or more of the symptoms listed below;

  • Feeling of terror
  • Feeling of dread
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • Dry mouth
  • Trembling
  • Sweating
  • Fainting
  • Anxiety

What therapy treatment can used to treat a phobia?

Simple phobias often disappear and require no treatment, complex phobias are another matter but all treatment starts with the Personal History Questionnaire and careful questioning to elicit the SEE.  It’s important also that you actually want to rid yourself of the problem, and want the change in your life.  You may need one or more sessions and the techniques used can include, but not limited to Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) and Eye Motion Desensitising Repossessing (EMDR) and Hypnosis.

In addition you will be provide with a Calm and Relax CD that is unique to you, and you will learn self hypnosis and other tools to take away and use 24/7 for as long as you require them.
